An autumn move brings the usual boxes and decisions, with wet-weather clothing and shorter days in the mix. A few choices before packing can make the first evening and the first school or work morning easier.

Sort around the move you actually have

If you have several weeks, work through one category or small area at a time. Start with things you rarely use, leaving daily essentials until later. Decide what belongs in your next home, what needs another owner and what needs an appropriate disposal route.

If moving day is close, resist opening a large sorting project you cannot finish. Focus on obvious duplicates, items you already know you do not want and anything that would make unpacking harder. Keep a separate list of decisions to revisit once you are settled.

Label for the person carrying the box

Write the destination room, a brief description and an unpacking priority on the top and at least one side. “Kitchen - breakfast bowls - first day” is more useful than “miscellaneous”. Agree room names with the household and your removal team so everyone means the same place.

Pack within the weight limits recommended by your mover and keep essential documents, keys and other valuables under your own control. Ask your mover about anything they cannot transport before packing it.

Keep autumn essentials out of the main pile

Set aside coats, suitable shoes, a change of clothes and anything needed for the next school or work day. Keep a charged phone and the contact details you may need easily accessible. Check the forecast closer to the move and agree how wet footwear and boxes will be handled at each property.

A clearly marked first-evening bag can hold bedding, towels, toiletries and everyday essentials. Keep personal medication accessible and stored according to its instructions. For children, include a familiar comfort item where you can find it without opening several boxes.

Unpack in the order you need to live

Start with clear routes through the home, somewhere to sleep, the bathroom basics and enough kitchen equipment for a simple meal. Then set up what tomorrow morning needs. Decorative details and perfectly arranged cupboards can wait.

Flatten empty boxes as you go when practical, and agree where packaging will wait for collection or recycling. Avoid creating piles across doorways. One functioning room is more useful than several half-unpacked rooms with no clear floor space.

Let the permanent layout emerge

Try a temporary home for everyday items before buying storage. After a few days you will know more about where bags arrive, where laundry gathers and which cupboards are convenient. Use those observations to choose the final arrangement.
